German Day 2021

This year's North Carolina German Day Competition took place virtually, with a mix of live online events and prerecorded submissions. Hosted by local universities, German Day is organized by the NC chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). More than 30 Cary Academy Middle and Upper School German students took home awards from the competition. Way to go Chargers!

Ellie McMahon '21

Congratulations to Ellie McMahon ’21 for earning the Girl Scouts of America’s prestigious Gold Award for her work promoting childhood literacy in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Gold Award is the highest accolade conferred by the Girl Scouts, awarded to fewer than seven percent of Girl Scouts whose work makes a sustainable change in their communities and around the world.

Christina Polge

Earlier this month, Christina Polge (’22) was revealed as the winner of the North Carolina Poetry Society’s Sherry Pruitt Award, earning the top prize statewide amongst high school and undergraduate college students for her poem manifest destiny. The poem, written for the Upper School Crisis During Leadership program, paints a vivid and often heartbreaking portrait of the United States’ westward expansion.

What are the traits of a leader who responds effectively to a crisis, and what are the hallmarks of a successful response to a crisis? How do we inspire and instill these traits and skills in our next generation of leaders? After much consideration and collaboration by the Center of Community Engagement team, a potential answer: a new, interdisciplinary, experiential cross-grade level curriculum that engages students in the complex intersectionalities of race, gender, and class relations in America. As Dr. Michael McElreath and Palmer Seeley explain, the Upper School’s Leadership During Crisis students recently had the chance to present their lessons and insights gained in the course of a productive and eye-opening year to the NC Association of Independent Schools Diversity & Inclusion Conference.
