Middle School
World Language
Your world is about to get a whole lot bigger.
Imagine being able to hold a simple conversation in a language other than your own. Developing a newfound appreciation of a different culture through hands-on exploration of its arts and music, social customs, and cuisines. Emerging from Middle School ready to tackle the Upper School’s World Language program and exchange (it’s coming in tenth grade!) with confidence. Imagine no more; enter our Middle School World Language Program.
Every single day, over the course of your three years in the Middle School, you will immerse yourself in your chosen world language—be it French, German, Mandarin Chinese, or Spanish. (Don’t worry, we’ll help you select the language that is the best fit and ensure that you are placed in classes that meet you where you are and encourage growth from there.)
You’ll check your English at the door—you and your teachers will converse only in your target language—as you participate in interactive activities aimed at proficiency, not just memorization. And you’ll move beyond textbooks to explore your target culture through engaging projects and exciting field trips that bring it to life in fun, authentic, and relatable ways. All in your target language, of course.
Maybe you’ll knock off the audience’s socks with a rousing rendition of In der Weihnachtsbäckerei during the North Carolina German Day Competition. Or try your hand at the fine art of Chinese calligraphy under the tutelage of a local Chinese artist. Or explore French epicurean delights at a local bistro. Or be moved by the passion of flamenco during a field trip to the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet.
Whatever your chosen language, you will benefit from supportive, small classes that allow our experienced teachers to get to know you and stay responsive to your changing learning needs. And use a variety of innovative technologies that will help you practice and take your skills to the next level.
Ultimately, you’re going to graduate from 8th grade as a more culturally sensitive global citizen with some serious language skills under your belt, ready to tackle the Upper School experience that awaits.
